The American reached her 12th final of the year with a straight-forward victory against Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-2 6-2.
Meanwhile, eighth-seeded Jelena Jankovic from Serbia rallied from a set down to overcome Czech ninth seed Petra Kvitova 6-7 (7/9) 6-1 6-1.
Williams, 32, pulled up injured after appearing uncomfortable in the fourth game of the third set, clutching her back as she walked off court with medical officials.
But the brief pause did not result in the world No 1 losing her momentum, as she ruthlessly finished off the third seed in convincing style, breaking serve in the next game before closing in on victory.
Afterwards, the 17-time Grand Slam champion said she had not picked up anything serious.
"My back was a little tight from playing a lot so I was just trying to release it," she said.
"Its been a little tight all week and it just spasmed a bit out there today."
Jankovic lost the first set on a tie-break, but the world No 11 dominated after that, losing only two games to crush Kvitova.
The Serb, who reached the top of women's world rankings in 2008, had no qualms in admitting that she has to be at her best to even have a chance against Williams, whom she has beaten four out of 10 times in the past.
"She's in unbelievable form. Even though I have beaten her in the past... I think she's the most difficult player to play against," Jankovic said.
