Former Nigeria women's national team head coach, Ismaila Mabo has urged Nigerians to support the bid of Asisat Oshoala and Vincent Enyeama to become the 2014 Glo/Caf Africa Player of the Year winners when the awards holds on January 8, 2015 in Lagos.
Enyeama will hope to become Africa's best by beating the duo of Manchester City’s Yaya Toure and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon to the award - thus ending Nigeria’s 15 years wait for the award.
The 32-year-old was an ever-present in a Lille side that finished third in Ligue 1 last term, helping the club to the UEFA Champions League preliminary stages and also leading the Super Eagles to the Fifa World Cup Brazil round of 16 with top class saves.
In the women category, Desire Oparanozie battle compatriot Asisat Oshoala and Annette Ngo Ndom of Cameroon for the top prize.
Oshoala, the favourite grabbed the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and the Highest Scorer at the U20 World Cup and she added the MVP award to her collection in Namibia. Oparanozie on her part scored five goals to emerge as top scorer at the AWC where the Falcons lifted their seventh African title.
"I want Nigerians to pray for our representatives to win the POTY awards this term. I am rooting for Vincent Enyeama to win the award for Nigeria this year, Mabo told Goal.
"Asisat(Oshoala) has done well too for her to be considered as winners of two individual awards including the Women’s player of the year. Let’s learn to support our own people as we aspire to address the recent lull in the country’s football,” Mabo told Goal.
The Head Coaches of the National Associations affiliated to Caf will vote in their order of preference to decide on the best in Africa in all the categories.
