Manchester City held by Hull but Chelsea win at Aston Villa

Hull held defending Premier League champions Manchester City to a draw at the Etihad, Aston Villa broke their goal drought, but lost to Chelsea, and Southampton left it late before claiming a winner at QPR.
A James Milner free-kick in time added-on spared Manchester City’s blushes after they had fallen behind to struggling Hull City.

David Meyler opened the scoring for the visitors after some poor defending from Manuel Pellegrini’s side but Milner salvaged a point from a 1-1 draw late on.

Aston Villa finally ended their barren run in front of goal after almost 11 hours without finding the target in the Premier League when Jores Okore headed home three minutes after the break as they lost 2-1 at home to leaders Chelsea.

Eden Hazard opened the scoring for Chelsea after eight minutes, slotting home after Oscar and Willian combined to create the chance for the Belgian.Paul Lambert’s side held firm to prevent their opponents adding to their lead and instead equalised through Okore.

But the joy proved shortlived as Branislav Ivanovic volleyed home after Cesar Azpilicueta had played him in, to move Chelsea seven points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table.

Tottenham claimed the honours after they beat Arsenal 2-1 in the north London derby in the lunchtime kick-off.

Arsene Wenger's side took the lead after 11 minutes through Mesut Ozil but Harry Kane struck twice in the second half to secure all three points for Spurs.

Southampton kept up their push for a Champions League place after Sadio Mane scored in the third minute of added time against QPR at Loftus Road.

Mane held off the challenge of Nedum Onuoha before firing into the top corner.

Onuoha looked to have redeemed himself soon afterwards when he prodded home but the ‘goal’ was chalked off fro a foul on Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace secured their fourth straight away win in all competitions thanks to Joe Ledley as they won 1-0 at Leicester.

The former Celtic midfielder nodded home after substitute Brede Hangeland had headed the ball back across goal.

Defeat means Leicester remain rooted to the bottom of the table, three points adrift of safety, and that gap could grow if Burnley manage to claim something from their game with West Brom on Sunday.

In Saturday’s other 3pm kick-off, Swansea came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw at home to Sunderland.

Jermain Defoe showed why he could prove to be such a shrewd acquisition for Sunderland as he ran from inside his own half to fire the ball into the bottom corner, just moments after Swansea had a ‘goal’ ruled out for offside.

But Swansea, beaten 5-0 at home to Chelsea in their last game on their home patch, have not lost back-to-back home matches at Liberty Stadium since January 2014 and Ki Sung-Yeung popped up to ensure that run would continue.

The South Korea international headed home Kyle Naughton’s precise cross from the right flank to earn a share of the spoils for the Swans.
