Liverpool and Chelsea could not be separated as they drew 1-1 in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final at Anfield.

The Blues took the lead somewhat against the run of play when, after a great run by Cesc Fabregas, Eden Hazard won a penalty off a clumsy Emre Can challenge and buried the opener from the spot.

But Raheem Sterling levelled in fine style midway through the second half when he turned and drove through a group of Chelsea defenders before firing in low from just inside the area.

Chelsea made two changes from their 5-0 demolition of Swansea City in the Premier League last time out, as Thiabut Courtois replaced Petr Cech in goal and Oscar's attacking threat was sacrificed for the added defensive steel of John Obi Mikel.

Craig Bryson pulled one back with a fine finish 20 minutes from time, before the hosts were reduced to 10 men as last man Jake Buxton was sent off for a foul on Loic Remy, and Andre Schurrle made them pay as he fired in a third to seal victory.
There were two blows for the visitors as Kurt Zouma was stretchered off in first-half stoppage time after being knocked unconscious as he went up for a cross with goalkeeper Petr Cech, before Didier Drogba limped off after slipping on the rain-hit surface.

Derby had to cope without Ryan Shotton after the defender was sent off in their Championship defeat at Middlesbrough, so Buxton was introduced as Will Hughes replaced Jeff Hendrick in midfield.

The visitors, meanwhile, rang the changes but Jose Mourinho still named a strong line-up for the trip to the iPro Stadium. Schurrle and Cesc Fabregas came back into the XI as Drogba was given the task of leading the line.

Goals from Erik Lamela and Harry Kane were enough for Tottenham to see off Brighton 2-0 in the League Cup fourth round.

Spurs dominated proceedings against their Championship opposition but were unable to make it count in the first half.

Lamela, though, found the breakthrough 10 minutes after the break when he completed a one-two with Roberto Soldado to fire home.

Then Kane capitalised when Soldado's shot was parried into his path by Brighton goalkeeper Christian Walton.

Holders Manchester City crashed out of the League Cup after goals from Rolando Aarons and Moussa Sissoko secured victory for Newcastle United.

Youngster Aarons opened the scoring after just six minutes as he capitalised on some sloppy play from Fernandinho to slide a finish underneath Willy Caballero.

The hosts were handed a further blow just minutes later as David Silva limped off, and Caballero had to be alert to stop Paul Dummett from doubling the Magpies' advantage.

Manuel Pellegrini threw on Jesus Navas and Sergio Aguero in pursuit of an equaliser, but instead Sissoko found the net as he skipped past Fernandinho and Bacary Sagna before sending the away fans into raptures with a cool finish.

Chelsea overcame Shrewsbury Town 2-1 in the League Cup fourth round after an incredibly well-fought match against their lower-league opposition.

After an even first half in which the Blues' attacking midfielders misfired and the League Two side came the closest to scoring, Didier Drogba broke the deadlock just after the break.

The Shrews looked to have earned extra time when substitute Andy Mangan netted with 77 minutes on the clock only moments after coming on but pressure from Drogba forced an own goal from Jermaine Grandison four minutes later to seal the deal.

Jose Mourinho lifted the League Cup trophy twice in his first spell with Chelsea and named a solid line-up to show that he clearly means business once more. However, the Premier League leaders were made to work hard for their place in the quarter-finals.

Shrewsbury went into the game on the back of four straight League Two wins and had already beaten Premier League side Leicester City and two Championship clubs in this competition. Their confidence and self-belief was evident in an even first period and the manner of the defeat was ultimately harsh on the home team.

The Reds' disappointing start to the season looked set to take another turn for the worse when Marvin Emnes volleyed the Swans into a second-half lead.

The home side produced a storming late fightback to reach the quarter-finals, though, as much-maligned striker Balotelli came off the bench to score his first goal in nine games with an equaliser four minutes from time.

And Lovren, who like the Italian has come in for criticism since his big-money move to Merseyside, scored his first goal for the club in the 95th minute in a stunning finale to send Liverpool through soon after Federico Fernandez was harshly shown a straight red card for a challenge on Philippe Coutinho.

Stoke defeat Sunderland as Marc Muniesa scores two

Marc Muniesa was Stoke City's unlikely hero as his two goals secured a 2-1 victory over Sunderland in their Capital One Cup third round clash at the Stadium of Light.
Last season’s beaten finalists took the lead with only 16 minutes gone when Jozy Altidore broke his 30-game scoring drought with a smart turn and low finish from the edge of the box which left Jack Butland rooted to the spot.
But Stoke responded before the break and were back on level terms when Oussama Assaidi cut in from the left flank and fed Muniesa, who burst into the box and then drilled a powerful low shot through Costel Pantilimon.

And the former Barcelona then hit the winner with 19 minutes to go when he seized possession on the left corner of the Sunderland penalty area and left Pantilimon grasping at thin air with his blistering drive.
Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet had indicated he would not make wholesale changes, while hinting he would select men who needed a game, but when the team-sheet arrived, it included the names of summer signings Pantilimon, Billy Jones, Sebastian Coates, Jordi Gomez and Will Buckley among seven new faces.

Swansea ease to 3-0 win over Everton in third round

Swansea claimed their first-ever victory over Everton to reach the last 16 of the Capital One Cup with a 3-0 win.
The two clubs first played each other in September 1930 but Swansea had failed to win in 20 attempts ahead of this tussle.
Yet goals from Nathan Dyer, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Marvin Emnes comfortably saw them win through to the fourth round at the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday night.
Dyer opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season after 28 minutes, Sigurdsson added another midway through the second half and substitute Emnes drove home the third in the closing moments.Everton had made seven changes to the side beaten by Crystal Palace in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday, and Swansea five to the team which lost to Southampton a day earlier, but there was no shortage of quality on the pitch and plenty of strength on both benches.

SURPRISES: Arsenal beaten 2-1 by Southampton in third round

Arsenal were sent crashing out of the Capital One Cup in the third round after 2-1 home defeat to Southampton.

The game got off to an explosive start, with Alexis Sanchez curling a sublime free-kick into the top corner from fully 25 yards, with Saints' goalkeeper Fraser Forster beaten all ends up.

However, the Gunners' lead only lasted six minutes, as Tomas Rosicky gifted the visitors a golden opportunity to equalise from the penalty spot after bringing down Saido Mane in the box.

Dusan Tadic nonchalantly converted, delaying his kick and calmly slotting the ball down the centre of debutant David Ospina's goal.

Brendan Rodgers' men, who have lost three of their opening five Premier League fixtures, were far from their best again as they drew 2-2 after extra time in a pulsating encounter at Anfield.

And the incredible action continued into the spot kicks, with some players required to take second penalties after 20 of the first 22 were converted.
A further seven would follow suit until Middlesbrough's Albert Adomah missed the target to secure the hosts' progress via a scarcely believable 14-13 scoreline.

Jamie Carragher: Hard to see Liverpool positives when you lose to United

No positives can be taken from a defeat to Manchester United, says former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.

Brendan Rodgers was pleased with Luis Suarez after the striker returned to action in the 1-0 defeat at Manchester United in the Capital One Cup.

Suarez was in the Liverpool starting line-up after completing his 10-game ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic last season, with manager Rodgers recalling the Uruguay forward at the first available opportunity.

He almost scored the equaliser after Javier Hernandez's opener but his second-half free-kick hit the crossbar.
Rodgers told Sky Sports 1: "I thought he was excellent. You could tell he had been out for so long - he probably tired a wee bit towards the end.

Luis Suarez pledges to help Liverpool challenge for titles after returning to first team

Luis Suarez has pledged to give everything for Liverpool just two months after he appeared determined to leave the club.

The striker made his long-awaited return from a 10-match ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic, but he looked understandably rusty in the 1-0 Capital One Cup defeat to Manchester United.

But Suarez looked fully committed on the pitch in contrast to his attitude last month, when Arsenal attempted to trigger a release clause in his contract with an audacious bid of £40,000,001.
Suarez then appeared at loggerheads with manager Brendan Rodgers, who he claimed reneged on a deal to allow him to leave for a side in the Champions League.

The Capital One Cup fourth round features five all-Premier League clashes after the draw was made after Manchester United's 1-0 victory over Liverpool.

The most eye-catching fixture sees Arsenal pitted against London rivals Chelsea following their tense penalty shoot-out win over West Brom.

Manchester United face Norwich City at home while neighbours Manchester City will visit Newcastle United.

Tottenham will face Premier League new-boys Hull and Sunderland will take on Southampton at the Stadium of Light.

The other fixtures see Fulham visit Leicester, Stoke visit Birmingham City and West Ham visit Burnley.

Capital One Cup: David Moyes delighted with Manchester Utd win

David Moyes hailed his side's performance after Manchester United beat Liverpool 1-0 in the Capital One Cup.

Javier Hernandez scored the only goal soon after the break, losing his marker Jose Enrique in the box before slotting home Wayne Rooney's corner.

The win was the perfect response to United's 4-1 mauling by neighbours City on Sunday and Moyes was delighted to pick up the victory against a Liverpool side who had beaten the Red Devils 1-0 at Anfield in the league.
He said "I thought it was a really good game. I thought both teams went for it, Liverpool had one or two chances, we did as well.

Suarez starts for Liverpool at United

Luis Suarez was named in Liverpool's starting XI for Wednesday's League Cup third-round tie at Manchester United, as he prepared to make his comeback after a 10-game ban.

The Uruguayan striker was suspended by the Football Association for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic on the arm during a league game at Anfield on April 21 and has not played for Liverpool competitively since.

Having now served his ban, he was included in manager Brendan Rodgers's starting line-up alongside Daniel Sturridge in one of only two changes to the team beaten 1-0 by Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.

In contrast, United manager David Moyes made eight changes to the side crushed 4-1 by derby rivals Manchester City on Sunday.

Rafael da Silva and Phil Jones both returned after injury, with goalkeeper David de Gea, Chris Smalling and Wayne Rooney the only players to retain their places.

Rooney, who was strongly linked with a move to Chelsea during the close season, was handed the captain's armband.

United and Liverpool have met on 188 previous occasions, with Liverpool winning the last encounter 1-0 in the league on September 1.

Victor Moses is in a unique position in Liverpool's squad. The on-loan winger was at Chelsea last season which meant he was an opposition player on the day of Luis Suarez's infamous and shocking bite on Branislav Ivanovic.

Moses was an 83rd minute substitute in the game at Anfield, which ended in a 2-2 draw as Suarez scored a late injury-time equaliser, and so he was on the bench at the time of the 65th minute incident. But there was no escaping the resulting fallout, which stunned the football world.
Uruguay international Suarez was handed a 10-match ban by the Football Association and has consequently not played competitively for his club since 21st April. However, in Wednesday's Capital One Cup third round game at Liverpool's bitter rivals, Manchester United, which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1HD from 7pm, he will again be available for selection for the first time in more than 150 days.

Sunderland began life after Paolo Di Canio with a comfortable Capital One Cup victory over Peterborough as Tottenham thrashed Aston Villa and Manchester City romped to a 5-0 victory against Wigan.
There were also third round victories for Chelsea, Southampton, West Ham, Fulham, Hull City, Norwich, Leicester and Burnley on a busy night of cup football.

Sunderland caretaker boss Kevin Ball oversaw a 2-0 victory at home to Peterborough thanks to goals from Emanuele Giaccherini and Valentin Roberge, with the recalled Lee Cattermole excellent in midfield.
Chelsea enjoyed a routine 2-0 success at Swindon as Jose Mourinho turned to a number of the fringe players in his star-studded squad, with Juan Mata setting up Fernando Torres before substitute Ramires, on for the injured Marco van Ginkel, struck again before the interval.

Manchester City destroyed Wigan 5-0 in a repeat of last season's FA Cup final with Edin Dzeko opening the scoring before the floodgates opened with Stevan Jovetic bagging a second-half brace and Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas also on target.
Tottenham continued their impressive start to the season with a 4-0 romp away to Aston Villa as Jermain Defoe scored twice, with Paulinho finding the net and Nacer Chadli opening his account for the north London side.

Fulham came from behind to inflict Everton's first defeat of the season under new manager Roberto Martinez as Dimitar Berbatov and Darren Bent secured a 2-1 success following Steven Naismith's opener.

Gary Hooper rescued Norwich from a Capital One Cup exit at the hands of Watford as his extra-time winner capped a remarkable comeback. Javier Acuna and Marco Faraoni looked to have the Hornets on course for round four before substitute Josh Murphy reduced the deadlock with 13 minutes to go and Hooper levelled with almost the final kick of the initial 90 minutes.

Southampton made 11 changes to their team from the victory at Liverpool but still had enough to see off League One outfit Bristol City with Gaston Ramirez on target in the 15th minute and Jos Hooiveld completing the scoring seven minutes from time.

Ricardo Vaz Te hit a dramatic late winner for West Ham as they edged out Cardiff in a five-goal thriller at Upton Park after Craig Noone and Peter Odemwingie had cancelled out early efforts from Ravel Morrison and Matt Jarvis for the hosts.

Hull City overcame Championship side Huddersfield at the KC Stadium with Nick Proschwitz scoring the only goal of the game in the 59th minute.

Leicester staged a late revival to dump out midlands rivals Derby at the King Power Stadium as Danny Drinkwater and Anthony Knockaert struck in the final 12 minutes after Chris Martin had put the Rams in front.

Danny Ings' brace saw Burnley come from behind to defeat Nottingham Forest at Turf Moor with Matt Derbyshire having given the visitors the lead.

Manchester United star Van Persie out of Liverpool clash

David Moyes has confirmed the ex-Arsenal striker is unavailable for the clash against their rivals but could be fit in time for their match against West Brom
Robin van Persie is out of Manchester United's Capital One Cup clash with Liverpool on Wednesday due to injury.

The striker picked up a groin problem prior to the 4-1 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday and did not feature at the Etihad Stadium.

David Moyes has confirmed the Dutchman will not be involved at Old Trafford, but has an "outside chance" of featuring against West Brom in the Premier League on September 28.

Speaking at press conference ahead of the Liverpool match, Moyes said: "I don't think Robin will play on Wednesday. But I think he'll have an outside chance for Saturday.”

Moyes also believes it is time to move on from their convincing derby day weekend defeat and believes he will learn more about his players character in the coming weeks.

He continued: "It's gone now. I can't do anything about it so we move on and get ready for the next game.

“I'm still getting to know all the players. I'll get to know a few more this week and see what they can do."

Finally he talked up the rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool and hinted he will include a number of established players for the Capital One Cup clash, in a match which could mark Luis Suarez's return to competitive action for Merseyside outfit.

He added: “It's a big rivalry and it could take on a bigger significance than people might expect.

"I think it means that Liverpool have a got a really good player. Does it change the complexion? I don't know. I'm not looking at Liverpool too much except that I know the quality of Luis Suarez is very good.

"The cup has been a route to giving young players an opportunity, but obviously this is a really big tie."

Manchester United currently sit in eighth spot in the Premier League, having taken seven points from their opening five league matches.

Chelsea last won the League Cup in 2007, during Jose Mourinho's first spell at the club, and were beaten by eventual champions Swansea City in last season's semi-finals. There have been questions asked of Mourinho's tactics and selections in recent weeks and he is set to make wholesale changes for the clash with Swindon Town, although that should mean Juan Mata gets an opportunity to show his worth.
