Preston 1-3 Manchester United: Red Devils rally to set up Arsenal clash

Goals from Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and a Wayne Rooney penalty prevented a cup upset at Deepdale and sealed Louis van Gaal's side's place in the quarter-finals
Manchester United set up an FA Cup quarter-final tie with Arsenal after overcoming Preston North End at Deepdale.

Scott Laird opened the scoring as the home side briefly threatened an upset, but strikes from Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and Wayne Rooney spared United's blushes and sent the Red Devils through to the last eight.

Rooney had not netted in nine games ahead of Monday's fifth-round tie, but ended his scoring drought with a late penalty after being moved back into an attacking role by Louis van Gaal.

That goal wrapped up the victory for United, who at one stage looked like they might be the latest giantkilling victims in this season's FA Cup. Simon Grayson, who masterminded Leeds United's victory at Old Trafford in the same competition in 2010, must have been dreaming of another shock against the 11-time winners.

Van Gaal's side showed character to come back, though, as Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini marked their recalls to the starting line-up with goals and Rooney struck from the spot after being upended by Preston goalkeeper Thorsten Stuckmann.

INDEED A VAL GIFT FOR S.G: Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool: Daniel Sturridge helps send Reds through in FA Cup

Liverpool came from behind with two second-half goals to reach the FA Cup quarter finals with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Fraizer Campbell gave the hosts the lead as the ball fell kindly to him 12 yards out after 15 minutes, but Liverpool were level shortly after half-time through Daniel Sturridge’s back-post volley.

Adam Lallana tucked away Mario Balotelli’s rebounded free-kick just before the hour mark to make it 2-1, and Liverpool held on to reach the last eight for the first time in three seasons.

Liverpool dominated possession throughout the first half, but lacked a cutting edge without the injured Raheem Sterling.
They were behind after Martin Skrtel headed a clearance into the path of Dwight Gayle to force a save out of Simon Mignolet, and Campbell was on hand to slot home with the goalkeeper grounded.

Stoke and Manchester City need late goals, Sheffield United spring shock

Eight Premier League sides made it through to the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday but QPR were ousted by League One Sheffield United.
Stoke survived an almighty scare against visiting minnows Wrexham before winning 3-1, while Manchester City needed a last-minute goal from James Milner to beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at the Etihad.

Arsenal beat Hull 2-0 in a repeat of last season's final but the big shock of the day came at Loftus Road where Sheffield United beat QPR 3-0.

Non-league Wrexham were just 10 minutes away from a massive third-round upset before late heartbreak against Premier League Stoke at the Britannia Stadium.
Mark Carrington put the lowly Vanarama Conference team 1-0 up against a club that is 95 places above them in the football pyramid on 73 minutes. But Marko Arnautovic levelled on 80 and Stephen Ireland fired home on 88 - and again in injury time - to spare Stoke’s blushes.
